Who Will I Fish With?
Fish with captain Erik Johnson, 31 years old and a licensed Alaska Sport Fishing Guide and 100 ton licensed United State Coast Guard Captain. Erik has fished the waters around Baranof Island since 1998. He's been a full time fishing guide in Alaska and Washington since 1999. His ultimate passion is to fulfill angler's dreams of catching fish in Alaska till their arms are ready to fall off. He's totally dedicated to each individual onboard to make sure they experience all that Southeast Alaska has to offer.

What Will We Fish From?
You'll fish aboard the ultimate fish catching machine, MV Grand Slam. This 60' custom built yacht with twin Caterpillar diesel engines was built for chartering in the Alaskan waters. The Grand Slam provides each guest with lots of room, lots of creature comforts, and a stable deck to fish from. It also is outfitted with all the latest navigation and fish finding electronics. This is a great boat for the whole family, with it's roomy cabin configuration, and private heads (bathrooms) which is always a big winner with the ladies.

We'll also fish from a fully rigged and outfitter 26' custom built aluminum charter boat, Lobo.  We'll either run it out in front of the larger boat or pull it behind depending on the situation.  This will allow endless possibilities for exploring or fishing during your adventure with us.

Where will we be fishing?
Your fishing adventure will begin once you arrive into Sitka and step onto the deck of the Grand Slam.  From here we'll begin our cruise and head either north or south to our next destination depending on the adventures you have chosen.

Our northern cruise route will take us through Olga and Neva straights to Salsibury Sound where we will anchor for our first night onboard the Grand Slam.  For evening activites we have kayaking and wildlife viewing.  Brown Bears often roam the beach in this quiet and secluded cove.  The next morning, we will awake and those who choose to fish from the Lobo will grab a quick breakfast and head out with Jake to the next destination which is Khaz Bay.  Those choosing to ride on the Grand Slam will enjoy a large breakfast accompained with the slower, softer and more enjoyable ride of the Grand Slam.  Along the way we'll also drop a bait down to catch salmon, halibut and bottom fish.  We'll take our time enjoying the picturesque scenery and wildlife viewing opportunites.  Meeting up with the other crew in the afternoon where we can share stories and take care of our day's catch.  Then we will enjoy a wonderful home cooked meal by chef Tam.  After dinner we will be able to kayak, set shrimp or crab pots or just sit back and relax.  Day three will begin by extracting any shellfish caught in our traps.  Then adventurous souls that want to fish for the day on Lobo will again depart for the open ocean.  We'll then head even further north exploring the western coast of Chichakof Island headed for Cross sound.  Once inside Cross sound, we'll finish out the remaining days of the trip exploring, fishing, kayaking, beach combing and any other activities that you would like until it is time to depart for Sitka.

The southern cruise route will take us along Baranof's outter coast to Whale bay for the first night.  We will have the option to stop at a remote hot springs if one so desires to soak in natural sulfur hot spring tubs.  Once inside Whale bay, one could honestly spend months exploring.  Whale Bay practically boasts it's own ecosystem.  If weather allows, we will slip furhter south and fish a famous and classic king salmon hole at Snipe Bay.  This bay also produces world class Alaskan prawns and scenery that is truly magestic.  Again, if the Pacific Ocean allows, we'll slide furhter south to the waters surrounding Cape Ommaney, Baranof's most southern tip.  As many of you know, these water are filled with large halibut, bohemith ling cod, and yellow eye rock fish.  From here we will have the option to travel back to Sitka either on the inside, northward Chatham Strait and down to Sita, or we will return to Sita the same route we traveled down on.

We customize each trip.  Your interest are our priority.  There is flexibilty in what we do.  We do have to plan according to what the weather allows.

Where will we be staying?
You'll be staying right on board our 60' live aboard yacht.  She was built in 1971, designed by Grandy, and built by Marlineer.  She has over 12 years of Southeast Alaska chartering and cruising experience.  Just click on the Grand Slam tab to see pictures of her.

What will we catch?
During your stay with Father & Son Charters you'll catch daily limits of halibut, salmon, and various species of bottom fish. If you desire to catch the behemoth size halibut there is a good chance of boating over a 100 pound fish. We land over 20 fish per season that weigh in over two hundred pounds. The summer of 2007 was another phenomenal year of halibut fishing with the biggest weighing in at 365 pounds. Another wonderful thing about this area is that we fish our halibut much, much shallower water than the norm. Fish for these big flatties with 300 feet of line out or less. Our favorite spot is just in 135' of water! If you are looking to take home good eater size halibut to feast upon then we can target those fish too! Take home several limits of 20 or 30 pounders for eating. Also, thrown in some bottom fish fillets like limits of sea bass or yellow eye rock fish if you so desire.

Expect to catch limits of king salmon June through mid August. Kings in the mid twenties are our average size fish. Most trips will yield a king in the mid thirties and sometimes larger fish can be caught. We've boated several in the high fifties and low sixties in the past few years. These kings are fighters. A twenty pound Alaskan king salmon will test your skills and the tackle. Most often these kings travel and feed in schools where double and triple hook ups are frequent and numerous.  Our largest king salmon in 2007 was a 51 pounder!

Mid July starts producing nice coho salmon in the 10 and 12 lb range. By the end of August, these fish are pushing 15 lbs and love to bite anything in the water. They are aggressive feeders and can be pursued with lighter tackle which definitely livens things up. The limit for coho is 6 per day and often limits are caught very quickly.

The bottom fishing around these areas is virtually untapped. There are still many rock piles, ledges, and flats that have yet to see a sport fishing line. Lingcod that will push 50 lbs perch on top of the pinnacles ready to eat anything swimming by, including your jig tipped with a bait strip. Rockfish are extremely abundant with Yellow eye the preferred species, with occasional 20+ pounders (see the photo galley).  You can experience light tackle action until you say "stop" on the impressive hungry schools of black sea bass in a feeding frenzy that always adds non stop entertainment.

What happens with our fish we catch?
One big issue we pride ourselves with is our fish care! Upon retaining your catch we bleed 'em, clean 'em and ice them down quickly which provides you with the highest quality fillets when you get home. After the day of fishing we'll fillet your catch and proceed to vacuum pack individual fillets. Your fish will then be quickly brought down to -20 degrees in our blast freezer retaining all the freshness right in the bag. When you get home, your fish boxes will have the freshest fish that will be preserved for a year after your trip. This is fresh fish that you can't get anywhere else!
